from last night when most people went to bed, hurricane watch now issued for the virginia coastline in addition to most of the north carolina. got a map to show you. we'll take another quick look at earl. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, that is under a hurricane watch. the watch has been extended. don't be surprised if later today, it is not extended further north up into maryland, maybe new jersey, up into southern new england later this afternoon. 125miles per hour. that makes it a category three storm. it has lost a little steam overnight. still a very formidable, very powerful hurricane. so tracking off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. it will be just off outer banks by overnight thursday into friday morning. so we'll see how things start to go downhill here over the next couple of days. for us, just a hot one. right now, we are in the 70s. 76 at reagan national. 70 in baltimore. 71 for you in ocean city. our forecast is easy. lots of sunshine. it will be hot this afternoon with highs back in the middle 90s. 95 intown. 96 in waldorf. 94, one of the coole

under way in parts of north carolina. prep rigs are under way from delaware, maryland and virginia's beaches down the eastern seaboard. laura evans has the latest developments. >> reporter: hurricane earl pushing through the area with high winds slamming the dominican republic. all is calm along the u.s. mid- atlantic beaches but that is about to change. earl is already making himself known along the coast with very rough water. in ocean city, he is churning huge riptides. >> we have a heighten awareness and should it be necessary, we'll take protective mitigation effort, actions for the city as a whole. >> we'll adjust the swimming regulation as cordingly. we'll limit people going into the water up to knee deep. >> reporter: the vicious riptides have already prompted hundreds of rescues. the water looks calm buts that proven to be very dangerous. one woman may have been paralyzed by the injuries she suffered. >> you feel the current. >> it was pulling me. you could feel it pulling you back into the ocean. >> hopefully, we'll be safe and sound and people will able to come down to t

to maryland and virginia. a state of emergency is already in effect in both states. you can see why when you take a look at the winds out there. >> about >> the good new is it is dragging the worst of its energy away from us. we'll still get gusty winds along the beaches. >> this was a major hurricane yesterday. let's get to t i'll show you the satellite-radar. again, the eye never making landfall although it is brushing the coast of the carolinas up into southern maryland here and southeast maryland as we speak. rain bands as you can see, most impressive, very heavy rain. we've got wind gusts reported up to about 70 miles per hour earlier this morning in cape hatteras. i mentioned it is pushing off to the north and east. it is getting kind of stretched out now. you can see it getting dragged there to the north and east and away from the washington area. the cloud shield all the way back into western maryland and western virginia and that will kind of get pushed out too. so hang in there. we'll have a left cloud cover and even some light showers. but later this afternoon, here in the washing

been extended to include the virginia coastline. the storm has weakened. but let's go to vipir. first a quick look at hurricane watch. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, virginia, under a hurricane watch. don't be surprised if this doesn't get extended up into new jersey this afternoon. now to vipir. let's take a look the at storm -- at the storm, maximum winds 125, gusts over 140 and charging off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. likely to keep this intensity as it approaching the carolina coastline overnight thursday and into friday morning and then charge up the coast during the day on friday. so watch this carefully over the next couple of days. locally we're doing fine. today is going to be another hot, sunny day with afternoon high temperatures back into the 90s. currently we're 76 degrees at reagan national. humidity 65%. winds shifting later out of the south here at about 5 miles per hour. but all in all, not a bad day. 95 degrees the afternoon high with a lot of sunshine. one more hot afternoon and then we'll start a cooldown which will include 80s this w

already been declared for maryland, virginia and north carolina. >> and the effects are already being felt. amtrak has canceled train routes in virginia. there are mandatory evacuations in the outer banks of north carolina and travelers are being advised not to travel and from ocean city. sherry ly is live in ocean city and joining us with the latest situation. tides started picking up a short time augment it is. we are just at low tide and so it should pick back up again but we've seen waves of 6-8 feet out here and it will only get worse. we are her a hurricane watch here in ocean city, although earl is expected to pass close off shore. we're still going to get pounded with high winds and heavy surf. we're looking at waves later today at 12 up to 15 feet. right now life guards are not out on the beaches but they will be shortly. yesterday they had restrictions as far as how far people could go into the water -- knee deep or less and that was it. and as the storm moves in, they are telling people to stay out of the water, especially during the storm. the storm is expected to hit sometime

in virginia, the governor has also declared a state of emergency. residents and visit iters have been ordered to leave hatteras on the outer banks. >> certainly a formidable hurricane. maximum winds have increased 145 miles per hour, gusted to about 170. it continues to intensify and deepen. i don't think it will get much stronger than this but this is a very powerful storm. thank goodness, it won't directly make landfall. we'll talk first about current conditioned. i mentioned to you it is trekking off to the north and northwest at about 17 miles per hour. now, centered 410 miles south of cape hatteras, north carolina. it looks like it will be right off the the coastline there of north carolina a little later tonight. we'll gradually see conditions deteriorate there. want to push onto hd radar, show you the wave heights. this is very impressive stuff. see the dark purple. that is right underneath the storm. wave heights are measured at about 33 feet. so that gives you an idea of how powerful the storm is even pushing up towards cape hatteras. wave heights are running a good 10 to 12 feet abo

like virginia beach, richmond getting some rain now, lower eastern shore get something rain. i know it looks impressive like we're getting a lot of rain here in washington but we're really not. there are some sprinkles not too far away. it is really racing at about 18 miles per hour. it will be out of here later this afternoon. we'll get some clearing out here to the west. let's get to our hd radar and take a closer look and show you the shower activity. here we are in washington. a few light sprinkles out to our west and more impressive bands of rain socialed with earl just off it our south and east. if you are down across southern maryland, down towards leonardtown, you might see light showers each of richmond and aross the lower eastern shore. you will get some rain showers and some winds particularly along the beaches. we'll get winds up to about 40 to 50 miles per hour as that storm races off to the north and east. the worst of it down at the beaches will be later this morning, four or five hours from now as the storm continues to track off not north and east. wind not too impr

to a category 2 as it sideswipes the seaboard, but people all along the coast including virginia and maryland taking no chances tonight. we have team coverage on hurricane earl. we'll begin with sue palka in the weather center. sue? >> laura, no doubt about it, people up and down the coast will know earl paid a visit on this early labor day weekend, but it's not as bad as it could have been, earl weakened from a category 4 this morning down to its current category 2 with winds of 105 miles an hour. look at it on our satellite radar picture here. you can see the eye looks as though it's trying to fall apart. that eye will be replaced by a much larger eye which will have the effect of expanding the wind field but lightening that wind field somewhat. over to our system to see our tropical track here with our category 2 storm. most of the track keeps it off the coast, maybe nantucket, cape cod, martha's vineyard going to get brushed here. it will stay about 150 to 200 miles off our coast, but again they are going to feel it on the the outer banks, good tropical force conditions and maybe category

the same for all the way up virginia, maryland, delaware and now watching hurricane earl just south of the cape up in cape cod, new england. let's go on over and show you what's happening. this is earl. now in the last few frames of imagery here it almost looks like earl is trying to move more east of northeast, but these things still wobble a little bit. so it's hard to say if that's going to be something that it decides to do over a long term period and any more movement to the east is a good thing because it will take the core of winds and keep it away from the cape, but they will have a lot of pounding surf up there to deal with, too. in term of its intensity, now this is from the 8:00 observation from the national hurricane center. winds continue to come down now, down to 75 miles per hour just barely a category 1 hurricane and the movement still at present anyway from the national hurricane center is to the northeast and that speed is increasing. that forward speed is increasing up to about 23 miles per hour and it looks like again any of the hurricane force sustained winds sh
